Arby’s

I have a feeling that some will mock me for this revelation (as now it just seems really obvious), but I just realized why Arby’s is called Arby’s.

Think about it: Arby = RB = Roast Beef.

Edit: I thought to look it up on wikipedia, and turns out - this isn’t the case. But it’s a heck of a coincidence. So, um, now you know.

Joyeux Noël

Netflix is great. I have rated hundreds of movies I have seen on a five star scale; and, based on that feedback, they have given me some good movie recommendations.

I got the latest one yesterday, and I watched it immediately. It’s a French film from 2005 called Joyeux Noël (translated: Merry Christmas), and it is about the Christmas Truce of 1914 during World War I. I remember hearing the story as a side note during a high school world history class, but the true meaning of the temporary truce was lost on me until I saw this movie.

If you’re looking for a movie that captures the Christmas spirit of humanity and caring for your fellow man, this one is worth the rental.

Edit: After reading over this post, I feel like I could be in one of those Reading Rainbow book reviews. Just saying… it has that feel, no?

Asians in sports

Since my first Google query didn’t produce any results, I’m going to give up easily and resort to bugging those who read my blog posts.

Why are Asian team sports players in America referred to by their first names? I noticed this first when I learned of Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki’s debut in the MLB some years back - his jersey says “Ichiro”. Many know the name Daisuke (Dice-K), but couldn’t tell you his last name is Matsuzaka. And the freakishly tall Chinaman Yao Ming is known only as Yao. (Dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.)

What gives? Is it something about Asian culture, where the surname is given less emphasis than we tend to give it here?

Edit: It’s the end of the work day, and our company’s Christmas party is tonight… so I took a few more minutes to do some research, and this is what I came up with.

In Asian culture, people’s names are most commonly listed as surname, then given name. This could be thought of as putting family before oneself.

When an athlete comes to America, they will commonly reverse their surname and given name, to adhere to how we do it. Some examples of this would include Kaz Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki.

Some athletes, however, prefer to retain the Asian syntax, and do not reverse their name - i.e. Yao Ming (whose surname is Yao and given name is Ming).

In the case of Yao Ming, his last name is actually Yao; which is what appears on his jersey.

Why, then is Ichiro displayed on jerseys, instead of the surname, Suzuki? This is a special case: he became popular as simply “Ichiro” during a special promotion with a Japanese baseball team. He asked MLB if they would grant him an exception, to simply be known as “Ichiro” - and they obliged.

My status? I don’t know; I was doing all right.

Bert!

Today, my dog ran away.

He was only gone for about twenty minutes, but that was pretty much the scare of a lifetime for me.

It’s a regular occurrence for there to be dogs in our office on Fridays. One of the perks of working for a small company with cool coworkers and a cool owner. (sentence fragment, i know! but i’m leaving it. dammit.)

Anyway, on the way back from lunch (I hit up a drive thru, for Bert’s sake) - we ran into another dog on the way back up the stairs. Bert and this other dog said hi, and we continued on our way. As I was sitting down to eat, I heard Bert barking at the front door. I figured it was the other dog returning with its owner back to their office. No big deal.

About a minute later, the door opens. That happens all the time, and Bert has never shown an inclination to run off - so I think nothing of it. About a half minute later, the UPS guy who opened the door calls back to get our attention, since nobody was at the front desk. He also mentions that a little dog ran out as he was opening the door. Why couldn’t he have said something as it happened?!

So anyway, my boss and I spend the next 20 or so minutes running around outside yelling for him. People in the complex tell us they’ve seen him running around, and I guess he made some good ground! He went in the back parking lot, throughout the entire complex, and even into open construction areas in vacant offices. I finally run into my boss again, and he’s got Bert in his arms.

Thank God! At that point, I was already thinking he may have left the complex. He did have my contact info on his collar, but still!

Well, he’s back. And now I have access to view the office webcam, so I can see if he makes a run for it again. He’s a dog, after all, and despite the loyalty we’ve built up in the past months, curiosity and the desire to explore will usually win out - especially if he has a reason (i.e. that other dog). In the end, I think he was just trying to score some booty. Can’t stay mad at him for that!

Thanks, Lance!

The other night, Lance Armstrong cameo’d on my iPod to congratulate me on setting a new PR for the mile.

When I got back to my computer and sync’d my iPod with Nike’s website, I was told that I had just completed a 7′59″ mile!

To most people, that’s not a big deal. But I’m the kid, who back in junior high, would be struggling to break 12 minutes because I was too busy sucking on my inhaler.

So thanks, Lance!

I’ll have to give myself a self high five.

After last night’s Territorial Game, the students rushed the field.

I criticized the action, because kids rush the field way too often these days. A few weeks ago, the Wildcats fans rushed the field after a homecoming victory over the UCLA Bruins. It was by no means an upset. Last night, the ranked ASU football team beat a - let’s face it - mediocre at best U of A team. Yet the kids rushed the field!? Are you kidding?

Rushing the field should be reserved for games that you don’t expect to win. Games that you are the heavy underdog. The way all those kids were talking, and the way that people were betting in Vegas, that certainly was not the case last night.

The only way I could have seen it as justifiable last night, is if ASU had clinched a Rose Bowl berth. That sure didn’t happen, either!

Anyway, the point isn’t that ASU students are stupid football fans. As a whole, they are. But the same could be said of Wildcats fans, or many other colleges across the nation. The point of this is that after I had made my point to my friends, the guy in front of me starts getting hostile. He starts to defend the kids, and starts ripping into my school and our bad luck in football. He ends his mini-rant by calling me stupid. “You’re the stupid one,” is what he said. Wow. He owned me, for sure. Nice job, old man. Put your headphones back on. I’m sorry if I yelled too loudly behind you at the football game.

Tonight, the Wildcats are in the sports national spotlight, as they host the BCS #2 Oregon Ducks.

To commemorate the event, I’ve quickly thrown together another graphic, in hopes of an upset:

A New List

Posted on November 13th, 2007 by Josh.
Categories: random.

I remember a while ago… I had a list of celebrities who I should get a free pass with, *if/when* I have a girlfriend. Just because, you know - they’re celebrities and the chances of even a meeting are so small that she would have to let it go if it happened.

Well I’ve grown up, and the Hilary Duff’s and Britney Spears’s have been replaced for a variety of reasons.

Here is my current short list, to be expanded upon later:

1. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (imdb)
2. Tricia Helfer (imdb)
3. Scarlett Johansson (imdb)
