Bert!

Today, my dog ran away.

He was only gone for about twenty minutes, but that was pretty much the scare of a lifetime for me.

It’s a regular occurrence for there to be dogs in our office on Fridays. One of the perks of working for a small company with cool coworkers and a cool owner. (sentence fragment, i know! but i’m leaving it. dammit.)

Anyway, on the way back from lunch (I hit up a drive thru, for Bert’s sake) - we ran into another dog on the way back up the stairs. Bert and this other dog said hi, and we continued on our way. As I was sitting down to eat, I heard Bert barking at the front door. I figured it was the other dog returning with its owner back to their office. No big deal.

About a minute later, the door opens. That happens all the time, and Bert has never shown an inclination to run off - so I think nothing of it. About a half minute later, the UPS guy who opened the door calls back to get our attention, since nobody was at the front desk. He also mentions that a little dog ran out as he was opening the door. Why couldn’t he have said something as it happened?!

So anyway, my boss and I spend the next 20 or so minutes running around outside yelling for him. People in the complex tell us they’ve seen him running around, and I guess he made some good ground! He went in the back parking lot, throughout the entire complex, and even into open construction areas in vacant offices. I finally run into my boss again, and he’s got Bert in his arms.

Thank God! At that point, I was already thinking he may have left the complex. He did have my contact info on his collar, but still!

Well, he’s back. And now I have access to view the office webcam, so I can see if he makes a run for it again. He’s a dog, after all, and despite the loyalty we’ve built up in the past months, curiosity and the desire to explore will usually win out - especially if he has a reason (i.e. that other dog). In the end, I think he was just trying to score some booty. Can’t stay mad at him for that!
